Professional Background

I've been in software development since 1992 when I started at AutoZone.  I spent 12 years there, in various development and leadership related roles, ranging from straight development to technical lead to software architect on various high visibility projects.  At one time, I had up to 5 direct reports.  I can not speak highly enough about my experiences at AutoZone.   Consistently excellent teams and an innovative company.  I left there in 2004 to start my own business.

I founded my own independent software practice in mid-2004.  This included much, MUCH research into business structures, financing options, employment and tax law... I'm probably forgetting a few things!  I spent roughly the next 10 years running a successful small business.  I traveled in various parts of Tennessee, establishing repeat clients in both Memphis and Nashville.  The relationships I was able to build and maintain during this time have been outstanding.  This was an exciting opportunity and I strongly recommend small business ownership if that is your thing.  The satisfaction, learning opportunities and overall excitement are hard to beat.  It is a LOT of work, so it is not for the faint of heart or the timid!

In late 2013, my wife and I opted to relocate to Orlando, FL.  Though we were both born and raised in the Memphis, TN area, we decided we had enough of the winters and wanted to be near the beach.  At this time, I opted to close my business and do more conventional W2 contracting.  I did this in part to establish myself in the Orlando market and just as importantly to learn this new market.  This has been an interesting learning process and very informative.  As you might imagine, many differences exist between the two, some expected and some surprising.  I have done several contracts here, mostly of a short term basis with a heavy development orientation.

Notable Skills

Over the years, I have worn many hats. I have cranked out code, led significant development efforts, managed people and projects, been part of tremendously successful projects and yes, part of ones that failed. This variety of experiences has helped me develop a core compentencies and practices that I bring to any project I am on.

  • Make software simple
  • Solve complex problems
  • Stay open to learning
  • Give and receive coaching
  • Be vigilant and thorough
  • Focus communication
  • Cultivate positive relationships
  • Keep an Agile mindset

What's happening now?

At this point, I'm looking for my next opportunity.  I have been truly fortunate to have some of the experiences and opportunities that I have.  I'm looking for something innovative, profitable, collaborative and fun.  I have 100% confidence that together we WILL achieve success!  Some of my interests include:

Story Point Abuse

Agile Methodologies

I am particularly fond of Scrum because of it's focus on communication and failing early.  That said, there are pitfalls that organizations sometimes encounter, one of which I speak on in this article. PDF

Artificial Intelligence

I am in the process of learning more about AI: Expert Systems, Neural Networks, etc.  I believe there is a LOT of potential in this field, from micro-sized robots that eliminate cancer cells to fully automated and AUTONOMOUS drones, Sci-Fi is quickly becoming reality.
